In a candid conversation moderated by Kerry Washington, Kelly Rowland shared a deeply emotional chapter of her life: the pivotal moment when she moved in with Beyoncé’s family at the age of 11.
The Destiny’s Child star credited the transition as a life-changing event that shaped her path to success.
Rowland revealed that the move was not only a significant moment for her but also a sacrifice for her mother.
“My mom told me, ‘I knew when you told me you had a dream, I had to figure out how you were going to get to this dream,’” Rowland said. “It broke her heart, but she knew she had to let me go.”
A Life-Changing Transition
The singer described the move as a blessing, acknowledging the incredible support she received from Tina and Matthew Knowles, as well as Beyoncé herself.
“They blessed my life tremendously,” Rowland said, expressing gratitude for the family’s guidance and protection during her formative years.
Rowland also reflected on her mother’s strength and selflessness in allowing her to pursue her dreams.
“Now that I’m a parent, I realize how much that took. I don’t think I’ve given her the credit she deserves for making that decision,” she admitted.
A Shared Journey to Stardom
Growing up in the Knowles household, Rowland and Beyoncé forged a bond that would carry them through the highs and lows of their rise to fame as members of Destiny’s Child.
Rowland credited the environment as one that nurtured her talent and provided her with the emotional and physical protection she needed during her early years in the industry.
“I needed their protection,” she shared. “It was truly a blessing to have that kind of support during such a transitional and vulnerable time.”
