Coco Gauff pulled off a stunning victory against top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka, winning 7-6 (4), 6-3 in the semifinals of the 2024 WTA Finals.
Gauff, who showed incredible resilience, won six break points to Sabalenka’s four, with an early tiebreak victory in the first set giving her the momentum she carried into the second set.
This marks Gauff’s first appearance in the WTA Finals title match, making her the youngest player to reach the final since Caroline Wozniacki in 2010.
Gauff’s impressive performance sets up an exciting showdown with China’s Zheng Qinwen in Saturday’s final. Zheng, who has had a remarkable season, defeated Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova 6-3, 7-5 to earn her place in the final.
Zheng’s victory came after a hard-fought battle, where she struck nine aces in just 1 hour and 40 minutes, outlasting a fatigued Krejcikova.
With a win-loss record of 31-5 since Wimbledon, Zheng has been one of the most dominant players on the tour.
The final is expected to be a thrilling clash between two rising stars of women’s tennis, with both Gauff and Zheng in outstanding form.
