A Kenyan community health nurse who lived and worked in the United Kingdom has been found dead in her home in Horsham, Sussex, under circumstances that remain unclear.

Peninah “Penny” Muiruri’s sudden death has prompted an active police investigation and an outpouring of grief from the Kenyan diaspora.

The deceased was discovered after friends and family raised concerns when she suddenly stopped responding to messages and calls.

According to close associates, Muiruri had been in regular communication before going silent, triggering alarm among those who knew her.

After repeated attempts to reach her failed, a welfare check was requested through UK authorities. Sussex Police later gained access to her residence, where she was found dead.

Investigation Ongoing

Police have confirmed that the matter is under investigation, with a postmortem examination scheduled to determine the cause of death. Authorities have not released further details and have not indicated whether foul play is suspected.

“At this stage, no additional information can be shared, police said, noting that inquiries are continuing.

Family in Kenya Raised the Alarm

Relatives and members of the Kenyan diaspora say Muiruri had no immediate family living with her in the UK and was believed to be living alone. When communication abruptly stopped, her family in Kenya contacted authorities to request a welfare check, which led to the tragic discovery.

“She had no relatives in the UK and was not interacting closely with other Kenyans nearby,” a family representative said, adding that arrangements are now underway to formally claim her body and begin repatriation plans.

Tributes Pour In

Those who knew Peninah Muiruri have described her as compassionate, hardworking, private, and deeply committed to her profession. Her death has shocked many within the Kenyan healthcare community both in the UK and back home.

Her passing has also reignited conversations about the social isolation and emotional vulnerability faced by migrant workers, particularly healthcare professionals living far from family support systems.

Appeal for Support

The family has appealed to:

  • Members of the Kenyan community in the UK who may have known her,
  • Anyone who had contact with her in recent weeks,
  • Well-wishers willing to assist with information, support, or funeral and repatriation arrangements.

As investigations continue, the family and wider community say they are seeking answers, closure, and dignity for her final journey home.
