New York Attorney General Letitia James has been sued by former President Donald Trump and the Trump Organization over an investigation into the Trump Organization.
Trump is asking that a federal court halt or limit her office’s ongoing investigations.
Earlier this month, James’ office revealed that she is seeking to question Trump under oath in a civil fraud investigation. James is looking into whether widespread fraud “permeated the Trump Organization.”
Trump’s filing accuses James of abusing her investigatory powers to target her political adversaries and advance her career.
“Since taking office, she has tirelessly bombarded him, his family and his business, Trump Organization LLC, with unwarranted subpoenas in a bitter crusade to ‘take on’ the President,” the suit states.
“Her mission is guided solely by political animus and a desire to harass, intimidate, and retaliate against a private citizen who she views as a political opponent,” it read.
This is not the first time Trump has made such claims.
He previously contended that he was the victim of political harassment when he tried to challenge a criminal investigation by the Manhattan district attorney, Cyrus R. Vance Jr. At the time, the Democrats were trying to get Trump to hand over his tax returns. The investigation was delayed for years, but the Supreme Court rejected his argument in February.
James says the Trump Organization has repeatedly attempted to delay her office’s investigation into its business dealings.
“To be clear, neither Mr. Trump nor the Trump Organization get to dictate if and where they will answer for their actions,” James said in the statement. “Our investigation will continue undeterred because no one is above the law, not even someone with the name Trump.”
