When @Jussatto, reached out to their local country radio station, KYKC, with a simple request to play one of Beyoncé’s latest country tracks, ‘Texas Hold’ Em’, the listener was met with an unexpected response.
Via an email, the station politely declined to play the song.
Unhappy with the station’s decision, @Jussatto took to social media platform X, to share the disheartening email from the station:
“I requested ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’ at my local country radio station (KYKC) and after requesting, I received an email from the radio station stating, ‘We do not play Beyoncé on KYKC as we are a country music station.'”
This post ignited a firestorm on social media, with users expressing outrage and calling out the station for what they perceived as discrimination:
“This station needs to be held accountable for their blatant racism and discrimination against Beyoncé. @1001KYKC this is absolutely ridiculous and racist. You guys should be ashamed. I grew up listening to your station. PLEASE EMAIL THE RADIO STATION TO REQUEST THE SONG,” commented one user.
@thewellfedlife said:
“This is why she’s doing it… she’s going expose how country /yt artist can go between genres with ease, but black artist cannot. This is how the stole country from us.”
@bricyaa felt the decision was racist:
“They just don’t play black country music 😅”
@thatgoodlifeny cut the radio station some slack:
“To be fair….they probably do not know that she came out with a country song 😂”
Amid mounting pressure and a wave of criticism, KYKC ultimately bowed to public demand, adding the Beyoncé song to their playlist.
“Lots of calls coming in for Beyonce’s Texas Hold ‘Em. It’s coming up on minutes,” the radio station tweeted @1001KYKC
One user offered an explanation:
“That’s cus we blew them phone lines up … don’t play w us 🐝👑,” said @ayootravv.
