Rihanna opened up about the side effects of her pregnancies during a Fenty Hair launch party in Los Angeles on June 12. “I thought it would just happen and grow back,” she said.
The music and beauty mogul’s relationship with her hair was forever altered after she became a mother.
Rihanna recently disclosed her personal experience with postpartum hair loss, shedding light on a common but often unspoken issue that many new mothers face.
In an interview with Refinery29 at the Los Angeles event on Monday, the Grammy-winning singer discussed dealing with unexpected postpartum symptoms after the birth of her and rapper A$AP Rocky’s sons, RZA, two, and Riot, ten months old.
Rihanna explained that her hair loss occurred in waves, which she had not anticipated. She assumed it would be a one-time event, after which her hair would regrow. Instead, she experienced patchy hair loss, causing her to embrace creativity with her hairdos.
“I did not expect it to happen in waves, either. I thought it would just happen and grow back. But it went this spot and then this spot,” she said. “Then at that point, you’re just like, ‘Alright. Enough is enough.”
Postpartum hair loss is normal, albeit frustrating. During pregnancy, the body attempts to adjust itself to the situation, resulting in a few symptoms as side effects. Postpartum hair loss is one of the side effects of low oestrogen levels in the body, causing follicles to decline. This shift causes a significant amount of hair shedding, known as telogen effluvium, which can be surprising because it far exceeds the average 100 hairs lost daily.
The superstar’s hair loss sparked a new journey, and she responded by developing “more creative and clever” hairstyles. Bubblegum-pink curls, honey-blonde layers, and braided updos are some popular hairstyles Rihanna chose to deal with her declining hair.
However, one of her most recent hair statements was simply showing off her natural curls in preparation for the Fenty Hair launch.
