Grammy-nominated singer Shanice, known for her infectious smile and iconic R&B hits, has opened up about her recent battle with breast cancer and her journey to recovery.
In a heartfelt interview with Good Morning America, Shanice, full name Shanice Lorraine Wilson-Knox, encouraged women to prioritize their health through regular screenings, stressing that early detection can make all the difference.
“When I had my surgery and they told me I had cancer, I literally lost my smile,” Shanice shared. “But I wanted to come on the show to encourage women that you have to keep smiling. I got my smile back.”
Speaking about the importance of yearly mammograms and ultrasounds, she said:
“If I would have gone sooner, I could have caught it when it was just at stage zero.”
In a special shout-out, Shanice credited her surgical team at City of Hope, specifically Dr. Veronica Jones and Dr. Lee, for their compassionate care.
“They did my surgery, and the great thing is they removed the cancer and were able to put in implants at the same time,” she said, expressing gratitude for the support she received.
Shanice’s message is especially significant given the statistics that show Black women are disproportionately impacted by breast cancer, often facing higher mortality rates.
“Put that fear aside,” she urged. “If you get checked early, you can beat this thing. It’s not a death sentence.”
The singer’s advocacy reminds women everywhere of the power of early detection, with her personal story now inspiring others to take control of their health: “You’ll live,” Shanice concluded, radiating strength and resilience with the smile that so many fans know and love.
