What started as a heartbreaking story of theft and struggle turned into an overwhelming act of generosity and unity in Houston, Texas.
Claudette Merchant, a single mother of three, found herself in crisis when someone hacked into her SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits account, wiping out the funds she desperately needed to feed her children.
With only a few dollars left, she shared her story—and the Houston community wasted no time stepping in.

Among those moved by her story was Houston rapper and activist Trae Tha Truth (@traeabn), who partnered with grocery chain HEB (@heb) to surprise Merchant with an $800 shopping spree to refill her empty refrigerator. But that was just the beginning.
“This is a beautiful thing,” Trae told her during the surprise. “You don’t have to worry about anybody stealing from you. You’re going to be taken care of for a while.”
In addition to the shopping spree, viewers from the @KPRC2 community donated an incredible $3,400 in gift cards and financial support to help Merchant get back on her feet.
Fighting back tears, Merchant thanked the rapper and the city that wrapped its arms around her:
“Thank you, thank you, thank you. Thank you, Houston. That’s a blessing.”
The powerful gesture served as a reminder of what can happen when a city comes together to lift up one of its own—turning pain into purpose, and scarcity into hope.
