SZA, the Grammy-winning R&B sensation, has teased an unexpected musical pivot that could redefine her career.

In a tweet on Saturday, Jan. 4, the singer revealed that she’s considering creating “peaceful children’s music” as part of her strategy to fulfill her record contract.

“To fulfill my last 2 album requirements I think I just wanna make peaceful children’s music n get outta here,” she wrote. “Then [I’ll] go be a farmer n donate the produce to underserved communities.”

While it’s unclear whether SZA’s comments were made in jest, the prospect of her stepping away from her celebrated music career has sparked discussions among fans and industry insiders.

Her mention of recording children’s music to meet contractual obligations is not without precedent; artists like Van Morrison and Marvin Gaye have famously used creative—and unconventional—methods to conclude record deals.

SZA’s discography currently includes two acclaimed studio albums: 2017’s Ctrl and 2022’s SOS. The latter debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and recently reclaimed the top spot following the release of its deluxe edition, Lana.

This extended version, launched on December 20, added 15 new tracks and secured the album’s place in history with 12 weeks atop the Billboard 200—the most for an R&B/hip-hop album by a woman.

SOS (Lana) features a mix of fresh material and updated tracks, with SZA hinting that more updates are on the horizon. On December 30, she confirmed plans to release “updated mixes and new songs” once her label returns from the holiday break.

A Playful Farewell or a Serious Shift?

If SZA does follow through with her plans, she would join a list of artists who have explored unexpected creative paths. Whether her peaceful children’s music becomes a reality or remains a playful musing, the singer’s loyal fan base is sure to follow her wherever her journey takes her.

For now, the world waits to see how SZA will fulfill her contract—and whether her vision of blending artistry with community impact will shape the next phase of her career.
