A 17-year-old Black student from Arkansas has died due to complications from the flu, highlighting the growing severity of this year’s flu season.
Ca’myiah Simmons, a student at Sylvan Hills High School in Sherwood, passed away on Jan. 31 as flu-related hospitalizations continue to rise across the U.S.
“It is with great sadness that we share the news that one of our Bears passed away,” Sylvan Hills High School said in a statement.
Her family has announced that funeral services will be held at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church.
Flu Season Hits Hard Across the U.S.
The Arkansas Department of Health has reported high flu activity statewide, with 30 flu-related deaths so far this season, according to Fox 16.
Public school absences have surged, with nearly 11% of students missing class in the week ending February 1st. Experts say this year’s flu season is one of the worst in at least 15 years.
Despite being commonly perceived as a routine seasonal illness, the flu can lead to severe and even fatal complications.
Influenza-related illnesses can cause pneumonia, organ failure, and other life-threatening conditions, particularly among young people.
The Hidden Dangers of Influenza
Young people are especially vulnerable to the flu, as their immune systems may not always be strong enough to combat aggressive strains.
Severe cases can lead to secondary infections like bacterial pneumonia or myocarditis—an inflammation of the heart muscle.
While individuals with underlying health conditions are at higher risk, even healthy teens and young adults can experience life-threatening symptoms.
Health officials continue to urge the public to take precautions, including vaccination, frequent handwashing, and seeking immediate medical care if flu symptoms worsen.
