Back in 2015, writer/director Sharon Lewis launched a campaign on crowdfunding site IndieGoGo, to raise funds to create film, Brown Girl Begins. The campaign proved to be successful, and the film is just weeks away from making its debut.
Brown Girl Begins is an afro-futurist feature film about a young black woman who is trapped in a world forced upon her, inspired by the 1998 novel Brown Girl In The Ring written by Nalo Hopkinson.
“In 2049 the poor are confined to an island off the mainland of Toronto renamed The Burn. Ti-Jeanne, a reluctant priestess, must resurrect Caribbean spirits and survive the possession ritual that killed her mother or her people will die.”
