Woman Arrested After Mistakenly Texting Cop Instead of Dealer for Fentanyl

In a bizarre twist of fate, a Florida woman’s plans to score fentanyl before checking into rehab went awry when she accidentally texted a narcotics investigator instead of her dealer.

Octavia Wells, 41, of Bay County, was arrested on New Year’s Eve after attempting to buy $45 worth of fentanyl.

Thinking she was contacting her usual supplier, Wells inadvertently reached Investigator Stephen Pettijohn of the Bay County Sheriff’s Office. Pettijohn’s number had been saved in her phone from a prior law enforcement encounter, and the mix-up proved to be a costly mistake.

Wells texted Pettijohn, unknowingly arranging a drug deal with the very person tasked with taking down narcotics offenders.

The investigator played along, setting up a meeting at a Tom Thumb convenience store in Panama City. When Wells arrived, expecting her dealer, she was instead greeted by Pettijohn, now undercover, and a team of officers.

A search of Wells’ vehicle revealed drug paraphernalia, with some items testing positive for fentanyl. She later admitted she had confused Pettijohn’s number with her dealer’s due to their similar initials.

Wells now faces charges of unlawful use of a two-way communication device, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving with a suspended license.
