Serena Williams will be returning to Wimbledon later this month after the seven-time champion was handed a wild card invitation.
Williams confirmed her attendance in a brief Instagram message.
“SW and SW19. It’s a date. 2022 See you there,” she captioned the post of a snap of her standing on a grass court rocking a pair of uber-clean white sneakers.
In April, Williams hinted at her return to the London court.
“We’ve been talking about my comeback, and he’s been hyping me up and getting me ready for Wimbledon,” she said told Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. “Can’t wait!”
The athlete played at Wimbledon 2021 last June but was forced to withdraw due to a hamstring injury. Williams also missed the postponed 2020 Summer Games and the 2021 US Open, all due to injury.
“After careful consideration and following the advice of my doctors and medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the US Open to allow my body to heal completely from a torn hamstring,” Williams said in a
statement on Instagram. “New York is one of the most exciting cities in the world and one of my favorite places to play – I’ll miss seeing the fans but will be cheering everyone on from afar. Thank you for your continued support and love. I’ll see you soon.”
Williams is 1,208th in the WTA rankings this week.
Williams’ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, recently spoke about his decision to cut ties with the tennis ace.
“I wanted to be fair to her and not be disappointed at the end of my career. I went to ask her what she was going to do. It wasn’t very clear to her. I asked her if she wanted to go to Roland Garros,” he said. “[She] told me [she] didn’t know. It was six weeks before the tour. I told her that I was waiting for her on Monday for training and if she didn’t come I would consider myself free.”
