Naomi Osaka Pays Homage To Serena After Win

by Yah Yah

Naomi Osaka defeated Serena Williams in a move that created ripples around the globe. Osaka won the match 6-3, 6-2 in the Miami Open first round on Wednesday (March 2st.)

But even after the win, Haitian-Japanese Osaka remained humble and gave it up to Williams who has been one of her inspirations over the years.

When interviewed after the match, on-court interview, the rising tennis star said:

“No, I was extremely nervous coming on to the court. I don’t know if anybody knows this, but Serena’s my favorite players. Just playing against her is kind of like a dream for me, so I’m very grateful that I was able to play her and it’s even better that I was able to win. I’m not really sure. I just kind of wanted to impress her, and I just wanted to make her say, ‘Come on!’ one time, and I think she did, so I’m really happy about that.”

Williams did not speak to the press after the match, but she did release the following statement, saying:

“Every tournament is an opportunity for me to better understand the areas I need to improve to be my best. Naomi played a great match, and I learn something each time I play. I look forward to continuing my return by progressing every day. I’m so grateful for my fans who continue to support me every step of this incredible journey.”
