Sources have indicated that it would be “political suicide” for any Democrat to challenge Vice President Kamala Harris for the party nomination.

This comes after President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he would be withdrawing from the race and endorsed Harris as his replacement.

CBS News’ Margaret Brennan reported that her sources align with this view, confirming that a head-to-head challenger is unlikely.

Brennan noted:

“Anyone, I was told, looking to challenge her would be committing political suicide to try to go head-to-head after Joe Biden had been so key in making it very clear, just within minutes of announcing he was not going to seek reelection, that he was endorsing her.”

As the Democratic National Convention approaches on August 19, focus is shifting to who will stand beside Harris as the vice-presidential candidate.

Democrats are rallying around Harris, with ActBlue, a major Democratic fundraising platform, reporting nearly $47 million raised since she launched her campaign.

The Democrats must secure the support of nearly 3,900 delegates pledged to Biden during the primary.

While some have suggested an open convention to choose the nominee, many have already backed Harris. Democratic National Committee chair Jaime Harrison stated that the party will proceed with a transparent and orderly process to unite behind a candidate who can defeat Donald Trump in November.

“In the coming days, the Party will undertake a transparent and orderly process to move forward as a united Democratic Party with a candidate who can defeat Donald Trump in November,” Harrison stated. “Our delegates are prepared to take seriously their responsibility in swiftly delivering a candidate to the American people.”

With the convention just weeks away, Harris appears poised to become the Democratic nominee, marking a significant moment in American political history.
