A 10-year-old fourth grader in San Bernardino is breaking academic barriers after becoming one of the youngest known dual-enrolled students in her region — attending elementary school while simultaneously taking college courses.

Honey Cooper, a student at Kimbark Elementary School, is now also enrolled at San Bernardino Valley College, a rare achievement that educators say is opening new possibilities for gifted young learners.

Like many children her age, Honey has big dreams — ranging from becoming an artist or fashion designer to pursuing a career in medicine. But unlike most fourth graders, she is already navigating college-level academics.

“I go to Kimbark Elementary School and Valley College,” Honey said, describing her unique academic journey.

School officials say her dual enrollment is highly unusual, especially for a student still in elementary school.

“It’s extremely rare,” Principal Brittany Zuniga said. “What I love about Honey doing this is she’s paving the way and opening doors for other students who may not have realized this was even possible.”

Balancing Academics and Childhood

Despite her accelerated education, Honey maintains a balanced lifestyle. She participates in theater, enjoys reading, and spends time with friends and family.

Her mother, Mia Cooper, stressed the importance of maintaining normal childhood development alongside academic success.

“Spending time with friends is very important because you have to work on those social skills,” she said, adding that screen time at home is limited to encourage healthy routines.

A Message of Inspiration

Honey credits her family’s encouragement as her biggest motivation and hopes her story inspires others.

“This can help kids, parents, and even teachers,” she said. “Anyone can do what I’m doing right now.”

Educators say her achievement highlights the potential of flexible learning pathways and may encourage schools to explore broader opportunities for advanced young students.
