Students and staff at an elementary school in Baltimore are mourning the loss of a longtime educator who was found dead inside the school building earlier this week.

Deborah Tolson, a mathematics interventionist at Arundel Elementary School, was discovered inside the school on Monday morning, March 9, 2026, after she died over the weekend, according to officials with Baltimore City Public Schools.

Tolson had served in the school district for 23 years, spending the past seven years at Arundel Elementary, where colleagues say she was deeply respected by both students and staff.

Cause of Death Confirmed

The Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed that Tolson died from a stroke, according to school officials.

Following the discovery, the school released students early at 10:15 a.m. so the community could process the loss.

A Pillar of the School Community

In a letter sent to families, school principal Kerry-Ann Malcolm described Tolson as a deeply valued member of the school.

“Ms. Tolson was a very beloved member of our school community for seven years,” Malcolm wrote. “A pillar of the school community, she was beloved by both students and staff.”

Support for Students and Staff

District officials said crisis counselors from Baltimore City Public Schools were made available at the school to support students, teachers, and staff members dealing with the sudden loss.

“Our hearts and thoughts remain with Ms. Tolson’s family and friends, as well as our entire school community, in this difficult time,” Malcolm said.

Guidance for Parents

School leaders also encouraged parents and guardians to talk openly with their children about the tragedy.

“Please expect our students to be affected in some way with this news,” Malcolm wrote. “I encourage you to talk about what happened and allow your child to discuss their feelings and thoughts.”

Tolson’s death has left a significant void at the school, where colleagues say she spent years helping students strengthen their math skills and confidence in the classroom.
