American poet Amanda Gorman is offering a powerful reflection on national identity, saying that being American involves more than pride in history — it requires actively confronting and repairing it.
In a recent interview, Gorman described American identity as “more than a pride we inherit,” stressing that it is shaped by how citizens respond to the past and work toward a better future.
“Being an American is more than just remembering our history,” she said. “It’s how we heal it. It’s how we recover. It’s how we hold ourselves accountable to being the best that we can be.”
Personal History and National Identity
Gorman, who rose to global prominence after reciting her inaugural poem at President Joe Biden’s 2021 inauguration, spoke candidly about how her own heritage shapes her understanding of American values.
She said her identity as a descendant of enslaved people informs her perspective on freedom and democracy.
“Freedom, equity, liberty are not just things we can take for granted,” she explained. “They must be fought for, protected and cherished.”
Gorman added that being American also carries a responsibility to defend not only one’s own rights but those of others.
From Inaugural Stage to Literary Influence
At age 22, Gorman delivered her now-famous poem The Hill We Climb during Biden’s inauguration, becoming the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history.
She has since continued her literary work, including authoring the children’s book Girls on the Rise, which celebrates women’s achievements and encourages young readers to embrace their potential to create change.

Gorman said the essence of American identity lies in balancing remembrance with forward progress.
“It’s to remember yesterday and always walk pridefully into tomorrow,” she said.
