The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) has withdrawn its endorsement of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), D-N.Y., over her support for President Biden’s reelection and her stance on Israel.

This decision marks a significant rift within the progressive movement.

The controversy began after AOC hosted an event with Jewish leaders to combat anti-Semitism, which the DSA criticized as a “deep betrayal,” accusing her of conflating anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism and condemning the boycott of Zionist institutions.

To regain their support, the DSA demands AOC publicly oppose funding for Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system and support the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

This endorsement rescission reflects a broader discontent among progressives toward AOC and other Squad members like Reps. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y., who have all endorsed Biden for reelection.

Despite their past criticisms of Biden, including Omar’s accusation of him “greenlighting the massacre of Palestinians,” they now firmly back his candidacy.

Progressive activists are frustrated by what they see as a compromise of principles for political safety. Many believe Biden, who has faced criticism for his handling of the Gaza conflict, does not inspire confidence within the progressive base.

Internal polls from progressive groups like Our Revolution reveal significant dissatisfaction, with 67% of their members wanting Biden to step aside.

Despite this, AOC and her colleagues appear committed to supporting Biden to avoid being blamed for any potential electoral failures.

This stance has led to accusations from some progressive activists that AOC has become part of the establishment she once opposed.

As tensions within the progressive movement rise, the future of their influence in shaping Democratic policies remains uncertain.
