Comedian and entrepreneur B. Simone is speaking candidly about cancel culture, influencer income, and the harsh reality of social media backlash after revealing her earnings plunged from a $1 million month to less than $10,000 almost overnight.
During a recent appearance on the Earn Your Leisure podcast, the 35-year-old entertainer, born Braelyn Simone Greenfield, detailed how quickly her finances shifted during a turbulent period in her career. She explained that in one 30-day span, she generated $1 million, only to see that number collapse the very next month.
“The very next month, I made a million dollars in 30 days, and then the month after that I made ten thousand dollars the next month… because I was cancelled on social media,” she said, describing what amounted to a 99 percent drop in income. “So I went from a million dollars a month to ten thousand. We are in the red. Code red.”
The financial downturn followed controversy surrounding her dating standards and backlash tied to a plagiarized book issue. The fallout impacted her brand and business operations, pushing her company into what she described as the red.
Simone used the moment to stress a lesson she learned firsthand that a large following does not guarantee steady revenue. “Followers don’t equate money,” she said. “You could be here one day, and consumers will just flip.”
The shift forced her to reassess her spending habits. In June of last year, she opened up about feeling the change during a shopping trip. Accustomed to higher-end retail, she found herself reconsidering where and how she spent her money.
“We were in Bloomingdale’s yesterday. I’m like, ‘We have to go to H&M,’” she recalled. “And I notice it in me now, just nitpicking. I just don’t have it to spend.”
At the time, Simone clarified that part of her tighter budget stemmed from reinvesting in her next venture. She has been channeling funds into the launch of her upcoming LTTA app, prioritizing business development over personal spending.
