As the African-American community and their comrades battle to remove the country’s Confederate statues, symbols of white supremacy, the Black Youth Project 100 (BYP 100) held a demonstration in front 19th-century gynecologist J. Marion Sims‘ statue which is placed in front of the New York Academy of Medicine. The doctor is known for his inhumane experiments on Black Women, where he would operate on their genitals without using anesthesia.

The drum home their point; the demonstrators donned hospital gowns with pink dye to symbolize the blood and pain these victims faced at the hands of this grotesque doctor. His experiments were on his enslaved victims were to benefit white women.

According to NewYorkDailyNews.com, City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito has joined the fight to remove the statute, stating: “We must send a definitive message that the despicable acts of James Marion Sims are repugnant and reprehensible.”

“There’s very much an ongoing dialogue and debate in the Caribbean, particularly in Puerto Rico where I’m from, about this same conversation that there should be no monument or statue of Christopher Columbus based on what he means or what he signifies … the Native population that was there when he came, oppression, and everything that he brought with him.”

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced plans for a 90-day-review of “symbols of hate” on city property.
