Community Unites Behind MSCS Superintendent As Vote To Remove Her Looms

by Gee NY

In a powerful display of community solidarity, parents, students, and residents of Memphis-Shelby County rallied last week in support of Superintendent Marie Feagins.

The event, dubbed “Faith in Feagins,” aimed to declare the community’s trust in her leadership ahead of a crucial school board vote set to determine her future.

A March of Unity

The rally began at 11 a.m. at the Sonic on Poplar and Hollywood in the Binghampton neighborhood.

Participants embarked on a symbolic 17-minute walk, braving the cold to march to the Memphis-Shelby County Board of Education building.

Organizers stressed the significance of the walk, with community leader Porsha Tony noting, “We’re cold, we have our coffee, but we are ready to support Dr. Feagins.”

The march culminated in a gathering at the board’s headquarters, where attendees voiced their unwavering support and urged decision-makers to heed the community’s call for continuity under Feagins’ leadership.

Defending Feagins’ Impact

Supporters highlighted Feagins’ contributions to the district, challenging the criticisms that have brought her tenure into question. Many argued that the allegations do not align with the progress they’ve seen under her leadership.

Latasha Griggs, a parent and vocal advocate, emphasized the importance of the community’s voice in the decision-making process. “We are stakeholders in this community,” she said. “It’s not about them—it’s about us. Just like they want us to hear them, they need to hear us.”

Divided Opinions and Uncertain Outcomes

The upcoming vote on Jan. 21, 2025, has divided opinions within the district. While some see a need for change, many, like marcher Noah Nordstrom, believe Feagins has earned the right to continue leading.

“The school board members claim the community doesn’t support her, but look at this turnout,” he said. “People are here, taking time out of their day to make their voices heard.”

Nordstrom acknowledged that despite the public show of support, the board’s ultimate decision remains uncertain. “I think they have no choice but to hear us. Whether they listen to us is another question. We’ll see on Tuesday.”

What’s at Stake

The Tuesday night meeting at the Memphis-Shelby County Board of Education will be a pivotal moment for the district.

The decision could not only impact Feagins’ position but also set the tone for the future direction of Memphis-Shelby County Schools.

As the district awaits the outcome, one thing is clear: the community has spoken, and they’re standing firmly in “Faith in Feagins.”
