Ashanti opens up about the surprise proposal from Nelly and planning her dream wedding!
The singer discussed her ideal wedding and how the “Hot In Here” hitmaker proposed with Entertainment Tonight.
The Grammy Award-winning artists, who first dated in 2003 and broke up a decade later, spent another decade apart before their significant reunion in September 2023.
The 43-year-old soon-to-be mother described Nelly’s proposal as a “beautiful, intimate moment,” revealing that they weren’t dressed for the event because they were at home.
Ashanti disclosed they were watching television in bed, dressed in pajamas, which added to why she was ‘completely’ shocked.
“It was just such a beautiful, intimate moment’ Ashanti told Entertainment Tonight. ‘We were not dressy.”
“I definitely had one of his T-shirts and his boxers,” she said, adding that she had no idea that would be the moment he asked her to marry him.
“I cried. I gave him the biggest hug and kiss ever,” Ashanti described how she felt. “I FaceTimed everyone I know… I was overjoyed, shocked, surprised, and happy like all in one.”
Ashanti also revealed why their relationship is different a second time around.
“Never in a million years did I think we would be here,” she tells ET’s Deidre Behar in an exclusive interview. “Ten years ago? Maybe yes. But after our breakup, you know, I didn’t even think we’d ever have a conversation again.”
However, Nelly got Ashanti’s number from DJ City after they crossed paths at Fat Joe and Ja Rule’s Verzuz battle in 2021, almost ten years after their breakup.
Now, three years later, Ashanti is engaged and talking about her new life at her maternity shoot with photographer Derek Blanks.
Ashanti confirmed that she would give birth before they tied the knot because their child was on the way.
When Ashanti says “I do” to Nelly in a moment that has been decades in the making, she says she must have a beach, sunshine, and palm trees for those wedding celebrations!
