Dr. Jen Caudle Debunks Autism Myths: ‘No One Thing Causes Autism’

by Gee NY

Family physician and media health expert Dr. Jen Caudle is setting the record straight on one of the most persistent misconceptions about autism: its cause.

In a recent Instagram post, she reassured families that “no one thing causes autism” and urged parents not to feel shame when facing a diagnosis.

Her video, which she originally recorded a month ago, comes amid ongoing debates and misinformation surrounding autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

“I also want to tell you that individuals with autism are amazing,Dr. Caudle wrote. “Parents should never feel shame, and we, docs, have your back. It’s going to be okay, it IS okay.”

Why Autism Rates Appear to Be Rising

In her post, Dr. Caudle explained that rising rates of autism since the 1990s are not evidence of an epidemic but reflect broader definitions, better awareness, and improved screening practices. She highlighted four factors contributing to the trend:

  • Broader definition of autism spectrum disorder, capturing more children than before.
  • Increased public awareness, with families more likely to recognize signs early.
  • Pediatric screening, recommended at 18 and 24 months by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
  • Expanded role of schools, which provide assessments, interventions, and resources.

Tackling Stigma With Facts

By addressing these factors, Dr. Caudle dismantled the myth that autism is caused by a single trigger — a falsehood that has fueled stigma for decades. Instead, she encouraged families to embrace both the strengths and challenges that come with an autism diagnosis.

“Autism is not a source of shame,” she explained, thanking schools, pediatricians, and families who continue to support children on the spectrum.
