India Arie Doesn’t Think Joe Rogan Is Racist:’ I Think Changed Behavior Is What We’re Really Looking for’

Following Joe Rogan’s very public apology for repeatedly using the n-word on his podcast, singer India Arie says she does not believe the media personality is racist.

“I don’t think Joe Rogan is racist for using [the N-word],” she said Monday on CNN’s “Don Lemon Tonight.”

“I think he’s insensitive for using it. So just don’t.”

Rogan’s clips went viral last week after Arie shared a compilation of Rogan repeatedly using the racial slur on old episodes of his podcast. Arie also announced that she would be pulling her music from the streaming platform until Rogan’s podcast was removed.

“There’s nothing I can do to take that back. I wish I could. Obviously, that’s not possible. I certainly wasn’t trying to be racist, and I certainly would never want to offend someone for entertainment with something as stupid as racism,” Rogan stated via his Instagram account.

Rogan went on to say that he hopes his experience shows “how offensive that word can be coming out of a white person’s mouth in context or out of context.”

There are still calls for the podcaster to be dropped from Spotify.

“I have to say, I did think he did a fine job with his apology,” Arie told Lemon. “He said a lot of the things I would want to hear someone say. The thing that stuck out for me most was when he said, ‘It’s not my word to use.’ And I think changed behavior is what we’re really looking for.”

She continued: “I knew about Joe Rogan’s insensitive comments around race before because I’m a podcast listener, and I had heard many episodes of his podcast. When I learned of his language, I just tuned out on my own,” the songwriter said. As a working musician who has always had issues with Spotify, and then they bring in this Joe Rogan thing, and now it creates a thing that I can’t not speak up about,” Arie added. “He’s not the reason, but he is the final reason.”
