In a resounding win for democracy and electoral integrity, New York Attorney General Letitia James secured a significant triumph as two right-wing political operatives faced the music for their attempts to suppress Black voters in New York.

Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman, known for their political shenanigans, were ordered to pay a substantial fine of $1.25 million for orchestrating a deceitful robocall campaign aimed at disenfranchising Black voters in the state.

The ruling, announced by Attorney General James, underscores her unwavering commitment to upholding the fundamental right to vote and ensuring that every voice is heard in the democratic process.

Last March, Wohl and Burkman were found guilty in federal court of disseminating false and threatening messages designed to intimidate Black voters and dissuade them from participating in the electoral process.

Their scheme, which targeted approximately 5,500 New Yorkers, spread baseless misinformation suggesting that voting by mail would lead to personal information being shared with law enforcement agencies, debt collectors, and government entities.

The fearmongering tactics employed by Wohl and Burkman caused severe distress and anxiety among recipients, with one voter even resorting to withdrawing their registration out of fear.

Attorney General James, in her statement, reaffirmed the sacredness of the right to vote and condemned any attempts to undermine it through intimidation or deception.

She hailed the verdict as a victory for democracy and pledged to continue her tireless efforts to protect the integrity of the electoral process.

Under the terms of the settlement, Wohl and Burkman agreed to pay a $1 million judgment to the state attorney general’s office, the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation, and individual plaintiffs affected by their malicious scheme.

Failure to meet this obligation by December 31 will result in an increased fine of $1.25 million, sending a clear message that attempts to subvert democracy will not go unpunished.

Attorney General James’ relentless pursuit of justice has once again delivered a blow to those who seek to undermine the democratic values upon which this nation was founded.

Her unwavering dedication to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of all citizens is a testament to her leadership and integrity.

As she continues to champion the cause of justice, Attorney General Letitia James stands as a beacon of hope for democracy and equality for all.
