Vice President Kamala Harris has vowed to bring home all Americans wrongfully detained abroad, following the largest prisoner exchange between Russia and the United States since the Cold War.
The exchange, which took place on August 1, 2024, involved the release of 26 individuals, including four U.S. residents who had been held in Russia.
In a historic move, Russia and Belarus freed 16 detainees, while the United States, Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and Norway collectively released eight detainees and two minors.
The exchange marked a significant diplomatic achievement and a relief for the families of those detained.
In her first public statement since the exchange, Vice President Harris expressed her relief and commitment to continue fighting for the release of all Americans wrongfully held abroad.
In part, her speech focused on the unjust nature of the detentions, highlighting the sham trials and harsh prison sentences imposed by Russian authorities. Harris praised the courage of the detainees and their families throughout their ordeal.
“We never stopped fighting for their release. Today, in spite of all their suffering, it gives me great comfort to know that their horrible ordeal is finally over,” Harris stated.
She also acknowledged the release of Russian prisoners, including those associated with opposition leader Alexei Navalny. Harris noted her conversation with Navalny’s widow, reaffirming the United States’ support for freedom fighters in Russia.
As the U.S. celebrates the successful return of its citizens, Harris reminded the nation of the ongoing plight of other Americans wrongfully detained around the world.
She assured the public that the administration would continue its efforts to secure their freedom.
“That is my solemn commitment to my fellow Americans, which I will always honor,” Harris concluded.
