Kayaker, Devin Brown, To Make Historic Solo Trip Along The Full Length Of The Mississippi River

by Gee NY

Minneapolis native Devin Brown is gearing up to make history with an ambitious solo kayaking expedition along the entire length of the Mississippi River, from Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico.

If successful, Brown will become the first Black woman to achieve this remarkable feat, spanning a distance of 2,340 miles.

Beyond personal accomplishment, Brown’s journey carries a deeper purpose – to inspire people, especially those of color, to engage with the natural world and embrace outdoor adventures.

Reflecting on the underrepresentation of Black individuals in water-related activities, Brown aims to bridge this gap and foster greater inclusivity in outdoor recreation.

Her fascination with the Mississippi River dates back to 2012 when a business trip to Minnesota sparked her interest. Drawn to the river’s energy and allure, Brown made the decision to relocate to the Twin Cities to pursue her passion for paddling.

However, her path was not without obstacles. Financial difficulties and periods of instability momentarily derailed her aspirations until she found stability as a massage therapist. With newfound resolve, Brown rekindled her connection with the river and prepared for her groundbreaking journey.

In addition to her personal pursuits, Brown has dedicated herself to introducing outdoor activities to communities of color. Collaborating with local organizations, she has witnessed the transformative impact of nature on individuals, from experiencing the joy of paddling for the first time to finding solace in nature’s embrace.

For Brown, the upcoming expedition represents more than just a physical challenge; it’s a journey of self-discovery and healing.

Embracing the spiritual essence of the river, she anticipates profound personal growth and moments of reflection along the way.

As Brown prepares to set off on her historic voyage, she carries with her the hopes of breaking barriers, inspiring others, and forging a deeper connection between people of color and the natural world.
