Houston singer Lizzo has been scheduled to appear as the comedy sketch show’s final guest of the year after the Yeah Yeah Yeahs had to back out due to illness.
“Surprise,” reads a caption on Lizzo’s Instagram page alongside an image of her name written on a Post-it note underneath actor Austin Butler who will be the show’s host for the evening.
Her appearance will mark her third on the show as host or musical guest.
Meanwhile, the rock band issued a statement about having to cancel their appearance.
“As many of our fans know, [guitarist] Nick [Zinner] has been sick with pneumonia the past month and it’s been an up and down recovery process,” the group wrote. “The band’s top priority is supporting Nick through a full recovery. As a result we had to pull out of from our engagements at KROQ’s Acoustic Christmas and Saturday Night Live.”
Born Melissa Viviane Jefferson, Lizzo began her musical career in 2013 after dropping two studio albums: Lizzobangers in 2013 and Big Grrrl Small World two years later. The Detroit-born artist would later sign to Nice Life Recording Company before signing to Atlantic Records. Her first major-label EP, Coconut Oil, was released in 2016.
She has since gone on to achieve mainstream success with the release of her third studio album, Cuz I Love You in 2019. It peaked on the top five on the US Billboard 200 and gave fans the hit singles Juice and Tempo. The deluxe version of the album included the sleeper hit turned viral sensation Truth Hurts.
“I deserve the spotlight,” Lizzo told PEOPLE earlier this year. “I deserve the attention. I’m talented, I’m young, I’m hot. You know? And I’ve worked hard,” adding that “I don’t think I’m the only kind of fat girl there is. I want us to be freed from that box we’ve been put in.”
