British Black Lives Matter activist Sasha Johnson is in critical condition at a London hospital after being shot in the head.
“It is with great sadness that we inform you that our own Sasha Johnson has been brutally attacked and sustained a gunshot wound to her head,” the Taking the Initiative Party (TTIP) said in a statement. “She is currently in intensive care and in a critical condition.”
The party says the shooting was a “result of her activism” and shared that she had received “numerous death threats.”
London’s Metropolitan Police says they responded to reports of gunfire at a house party in southeast London early hours of Sunday morning.
Johnso, 27, was then rushed to a hospital where she received treatment for a gunshot wound.
Johnson helped organize a chain of protests across Britain last summer and the Million People March in London in August.
“As a people, we’re not going to stop until we have equal rights and justice,” Johnson said at the time. She added that it was her wish that the movement helped “empower the community to strive for better.”
A police statement denied any evidence suggesting Johnson has been targeted attack or that she “had received any credible threats against her prior to this incident.”
“A dedicated team of detectives is working tirelessly to identify the person or persons responsible for this shooting,” said Detective Chief Inspector Jim Tele. He added that “they need the public’s help,” and urged people to come forward if they witnessed or had heard information about the incident.
The investigation is ongoing.
