Rep. Maxine Waters has vowed to defy and protest the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
“You ain’t seen nothing yet,” Waters said. “Women are going to control their bodies no matter how they try and stop us. The hell with the Supreme Court. We will defy them. Women will be in control of their bodies. And if they think Black women are intimidated or afraid, they got another thought coming.”
“Black women will be out in droves,” she continued. “We will be out by the thousands, we will be out by the millions. We are going to make sure we fight for the right to control our own bodies.”
The decision to overrule Roe was 6-3 in a majority opinion delivered by Justice Samuel Alito. Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett voted in favor of making abortion illegal.
“Roe was egregiously wrong from the start,” Alito wrote. “Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences. And far from bringing about a national settlement of the abortion issue, Roe and Casey have enflamed debate and deepened division.”
President Joe Biden is calling on Congress to reverse the decision.
Biden said: “It was three justices, named by one president – Donald Trump – at the core of today’s decision to upend the scales of justice and eliminate a fundamental right for women in this country.
“It is the realization of an extreme ideology, and a tragic error by the Supreme Court, in my view. The health and life of women in this nation are now at risk. It is a sad day for the court and a sad day for the country. The court is literally taking the country back 150 years.”
