Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) on Sunday praised President Joe Biden for pardoning his son, Hunter Biden, while calling out Republicans for what she described as their hypocrisy.
“Because at the end of the day, we know that we have a 34-count convicted felon that is about to walk into the White House,” Crockett said of Donald Trump in an appearance on MSNBC.
Crockett then addressed critics of the president’s decision to pardon his son, calling out “anyone clutching their pearls” over the move. Hunter Biden was found guilty in June of illegally owning a firearm in 2018 and pleaded guilty in September to charges in a tax case.
“I would say take a look in the mirror because we also know that when it comes to this Cabinet, this Cabinet has more people accused of sexual assault than any incoming Cabinet probably ever in the history of America,” Crockett said in reference to several of the president-elect’s picks to join his administration.
She added: “So we are living in unprecedented times and we know that this was completely political, as someone who serves on the [House] oversight committee, this was gamesmanship the entire time.”
Crockett has previously criticized members of the GOP-led committee, accusing them of prioritizing efforts to “please Trump” in their investigations of President Joe Biden and his son.
President Biden, who had previously pledged not to pardon or commute his son’s sentences, stated on Sunday that Hunter Biden was “unfairly prosecuted” and “singled out solely because he is my son.” Biden added that his son’s mistakes had been exploited by Republicans to “publicly humiliate and shame him” and his family for “political gain.”
Hunter Biden faced a potential 25-year sentence for gun charges and up to 17 years for tax-related charges. However, sentencing experts, as reported by The New York Times, had predicted that he was unlikely to serve more than 36 months.
