Serena Williams has opened up about her journey with GLP-1 medication, which she’s been using to assist in her weight loss efforts, and she aims to challenge the negative perceptions surrounding these popular drugs.

In a candid interview with TODAY on August 21, Williams disclosed that she has been taking the GLP-1 medication called Ro and has successfully shed 31 pounds so far. She explained, “A common misconception is that it’s a shortcut. As an athlete who has always put in the work, I found it tough to get my weight to a healthy level — and let me tell you, I don’t believe in taking shortcuts.”

Now a celebrity patient ambassador for Ro, Williams admitted that she initially had her doubts, but has decided to continue with the medication in the long run. “After having my kids, I felt like my body was lacking something. I’m not sure if it’s what the GLP-1 offers, but I finally feel like myself again.”

The 23-time Grand Slam champion discussed her choice to turn to a weight loss medication after welcoming her second daughter, sharing that she’s seen a weight loss of 31 pounds over the past year since starting treatment.

Williams also addressed the stigma related to these weight loss medications, stating, “If you’re using GLP-1s, don’t let anyone make you feel like you’re choosing the ‘easy way out.’ What you’re doing is taking care of yourself, and that’s a brave decision.”

In her conversation with People magazine, Williams expressed that she feels “really good and healthy.” She elaborated, “I feel lighter, both physically and mentally. I can do more, I’m more active, and my joints don’t ache as much anymore. Simple tasks feel much easier, and I can accomplish them more quickly.”
