SZA is trading her microphone for a script as she makes her highly anticipated acting debut in the upcoming R-rated buddy comedy One of Them Days, with Keke Palmer joining her for this hilarious ride.
SZA and Keke Palmer’s on-screen chemistry has already generated a lot of buzz. Palmer, who is no stranger to comedy and has received glowing reviews for her roles in Hustlers and Nope, appears to be the ideal complement to SZA’s fresh and exciting debut.
SZA won Best R&B Song for “Snooze,” Best Progressive R&B Album for “SOS,” and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Ghost in the Machine” with Phoebe Bridgers at the Grammy Awards earlier this year. She also performed “Kill Bill” as dancers fought with katanas around her. Since then, she has released the one-off single “Saturn.”
“One of Them Days” plot revolves around best friends and roommates Dreux (Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA), as they prepare for a chaotic day after Alyssa’s boyfriend, played by social media star and newcomer Joshua David Neal, blows their rent money. Cue the laughs as they embark on a hijinks-filled day to fulfill the payment and maintain their close friendship. The R-rated movie is directed by Lawrence Lamont, produced by Issa Rae, and written by Rae’s frequent collaborator Syreeta Singleton.
“Best friends and roommates Dreux (Keke Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA) are about to have one of them days,” the logline says. “When they discover Alyssa’s boyfriend has blown their rent money, the duo finds themselves going to extremes in a comical race against the clock to avoid eviction and keep their friendship intact.”
TriStar Pictures’ R-rated buddy comedy cast includes Lil Rel Howery, Janelle James, Maude Apatow, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Katt Williams, Joshua Neal, Aziza Scott, and Patrick Cage.
Sony released the first trailer for “One of Them Days” on October 24. The trailer shows the lengths the two friends go to for their rent money, including donating blood, climbing a telephone pole to retrieve a pair of expensive Jordans, and applying for a loan despite a hilariously low credit score.
“One of Them Days” marks SZA’s acting debut and the second time she and Palmer have worked together. The two previously appeared on “Saturday Night Live” in 2022. According to reports, that encounter inspired the idea for this film.
Lawrence Lamont makes his feature directorial debut with a script by Syreeta Singleton. The project is under Issa Rae’s Hoorae banner. Singleton and Lamont first worked together on the set of Rae’s hip-hop drama “Rap sh!t,” where Singleton served as showrunner, and Lamont directed a few episodes.
“One of Them Days” was conceived at the CoCre lab at Sony Pictures, a collaboration between ColorCreative and Sony Pictures to help diverse, up-and-coming screenwriters develop their first original studio features.
