In a conversation with Conan O’Brien for his “Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend” podcast, Tracee Ellis Ross, shed light on the challenges and setbacks she faced on her journey to Hollywood success.

The renowned actress known for her roles in “Girlfriends” and “Black-ish,” dispelled the misconception that her career trajectory was smooth sailing.

Contrary to popular belief, Ross revealed that there was a six-year gap between the cancellation of “Girlfriends” in 2008 and her subsequent role in “Black-ish.”

She attributed part of this hiatus to the segregation prevalent in Hollywood, emphasizing that despite the success of “Girlfriends,” the industry at large did not readily open its doors for her.

Reflecting on the discouraging remarks made by her former agent upon being dropped from The Gersh Agency, Ross recounted being told:

“You just don’t pop.”

Despite carrying the weight of that particular criticism for years, she acknowledged how they could either serve as fuel for personal growth or burden one indefinitely.

Ross emphasized that everyone faces moments of doubt and criticism, likening her experience to others in the industry, including her famous mother, Diana Ross. She noted that such challenges can either propel individuals forward or hold them back, depending on how they choose to respond.

Ultimately, Ross expressed that she has transcended the negative impact of past setbacks, underscoring the resilience and determination that have propelled her to overcome adversity and thrive in her career.

Through her candid revelations, Tracee Ellis Ross offers a powerful reminder that success is often accompanied by struggles and setbacks.
