Tyla is making it clear she stands by what she said! The Grammy-winning South African singer recently made waves after responding to Nigerian superstar Tiwa Savage, who offered an apology on Tyla’s behalf for her use of the term “coloured.”

Here’s the story. In a U.S. interview last month, Tyla referred to herself using the South African term “coloured,” which carries a specific cultural meaning in her homeland. However, in the U.S., the term has a complicated and painful history, leading many fans to misinterpret her intent.

Tiwa Savage stepped in to help clarify things during her appearance on The Breakfast Club. She stated, “If that wasn’t communicated well… on behalf of her, we apologise,” adding that, as an elder, it was her responsibility to intervene and help fix the situation.

However, Tyla wasn’t having any of it. While performing at the Global Citizen Festival in New York, in front of 60,000 fans, she confidently took the microphone and declared, “Sorry, I’m not sorry, eh!”

The audience went wild. Many interpreted this moment as Tyla reclaiming her own narrative after feeling that others were speaking on her behalf. One fan on X commented, “That’s how you stand ten toes down in your identity!” while another noted, “Tiwa meant well, but Tyla didn’t ask for a spokesperson.”

As the “Water” hitmaker continues to break down global barriers for South African music, this incident revealed a different aspect of her personality firmly rooted in her identity.
