A video of Rep. Stacey Plaskett has resurfaced showing her using lyrics from Run The Jewels and GZA while giving remarks during the Senate impeachment trial of Donald Trump.
In the video, Rep Plaskett can be seen standing among colleagues on the Senate floor when she is heard stating “The truth is usually seen and rarely heard,” in reference to lyrics from Beneath the Surface’s Breaker Breaker by GZA.
“Truth is truth, whether denied or not,” she continued, adding lines from El-P’s 2014 hit record, Early.
“And the truth is, President Trump had spent months calling his supporters to a march on a specific day, at a specific time, in specific places to stop the certification,” she went on.
She then shared the video on X, formerly Twitter, stating “During my presentation in the impeachment trial yesterday, I made two references from the hip hop genre. ‘The truth is usually seen and rarely heard’ from GZA of the Wu-Tang Clan and ‘Truth is truth, whether denied or not,’ from Run the Jewels.”
When GZA and Run the Jewels got wind that she quoted their lyrics, they took to social media to respond.
“Apparently my verse from ‘Early’ was just quoted during the impeachment, making it part of the permanent historical record of senate testimony,” El-P wrote on Instagram. “I’ll just let that sit here for a minute.
GZA shared the clip on Instagram and tagged the rap duo. According to CNN, Plaskett made history in 2021 by becoming the first-ever delegate to serve on a team of impeachment managers. Plaskett, now in her fourth term representing the U.S. Virgin Islands at-large congressional district, couldn’t vote on Trump’s impeachment last month as she represents a U.S. territory, not a state. Nevertheless, leveraging her legal background, Plaskett is now acting as a prosecutor against Trump in the Senate trial. Check out her tweet and reactions from El-P and GZA below. Additionally, GZA posted the video on Instagram and tagged the rap duo. CNN previously reported in 2021 that Plaskett made history by being the first-ever delegate to serve on a team of impeachment managers.
