As Southern California grapples with devastating wildfires, Whoopi Goldberg has weighed in on criticism targeting Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass for their handling of the crisis.
Speaking on The View, Goldberg expressed her frustration with those assigning blame to state and local leaders.
“Here’s how this works. There was a fire catastrophe in California. It had to do with winds,” Goldberg said. “You know how they always say, ‘Oh, the wind’? It actually does. The winds move things, and sparks move things.”
Drawing from her personal experiences as a California resident, Goldberg noted the challenges of combating wildfires.
“It doesn’t matter how much water you have if 900,000 buildings go up at the same time,” she explained, referencing the scale and unpredictability of such disasters.
Goldberg criticized the tendency to point fingers in the wake of natural disasters, urging people to focus on solutions instead.
“I take great offense at pointing fingers,” she said. “You should be pointing fingers about how we can help. It’s too soon to be saying, ‘Oh, it’s Gavin’s fault.’ It’s nobody’s fault. This is a catastrophe.”
Goldberg also dismissed conspiracy theories about weather manipulation, stressing the uncontrollable nature of Mother Nature.
“Mother Nature doesn’t give a damn what we want. Mother Nature does what she does. And if you’re in the way, this is what happens,” she stated.
The wildfires have claimed at least 24 lives and prompted widespread evacuations. While Goldberg acknowledged the significant loss and ongoing challenges, she spoke about the importance of collaboration and proactive measures to mitigate future disasters.
The L.A. fires have sparked heated debates about the state’s disaster preparedness and leadership. However, Goldberg’s comment iis a call for unity and constructive efforts rather than divisive blame.
