Whoopi Goldberg spoke from experience while discussing age gaps in relationships. The View host revealed that she has dated a man 40 years her senior before and some significantly younger men.
On Thursday, the Sister Act star discussed “The Idea of You,” an upcoming movie starring Anne Hathaway as a mom in her 40s who dates a pop star, played by Nicholas Galitzine, in his 20s.
“I’ve gone up and down because your age is not what will get me into your arms. It’s not your age that I’m concerned about. Unless you’re under 18, I can’t,” Whoopi Goldberg said on the episode.
Goldberg has married three times. Her first husband was drug counselor Alvin Martin, whom she divorced in 1979. She then married cinematographer David Claessen from 1986 to 1988. Her last legal union was with organizer Lyle Trachtenberg. Their relationship lasted a year and ended in 1995.
In addition to her husbands, Whoopi Goldberg has actively participated in living with her boyfriends, including actor Frank Langella and playwright David Schein.
Her ex-boyfriends include businessman Michael Visbal, orthodontist Jeffrey Cohen, cameraman Edward Gold, and actors Timothy Dalton and Ted Danson.
In response to Goldberg’s admission that she will not ghost a partner because of age, cohost Joy Behar argued that a significant age difference “could be problematic.”
“Sixty and 80 starts to get a little hairy,” he added to drive his point home.
But Whoopi had a bigger bombshell on the way: “Actually, I’m just going to say this to you. In one of the last relationships I had, he was 40 years older than me.”
The revelation came after Amara Skye, Goldberg’s granddaughter, claimed on the ABC reality show “Claim to Fame” in 2022 that Goldberg had previously dated a billionaire in his 90s.
