Growing up famous might sound like living a dream to most but to some, it can be a pain. Well, it is according to actress and style icon Willow Smith. The 17-year-old recently opened up to Girlgaze about her life and being the daughter Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith. The Whip My Hair singer stated that growing up is “excruciatingly terrible” and she summed up her experience as āGrowing up and trying to figure out your lifeā¦while people feel like they have some sort of entitlement to know whatās going on, is absolutely, excruciatingly terrible ā and the only way to get over it, is to go into it.ā
Even though Smith along with her brother Jaden have accomplished so much in their lives it, unfortunately, doesn’t take away that they will always be known as the children of Will and Jada Smith.āYou canāt change your face. You canāt change your parents. You canāt change any of those things,ā Smith added. āMost kids like me end up going down a spiral of depression, and the world is sitting there looking at them through their phones; laughing and making jokes and making memes at the crippling effect that this lifestyle has on the psyche.ā
Growing up in the public eye one can face difficulties, so most can sympathize with what Willow has gone through and what she may be going through today. Smith stated “When youāre born into it, there are two choices that you have; Iām either going to try to go into it completely and help from the inside, orā¦Iām really going to take myself completely out of the eye of society. Thereās really no in-between.ā

āGrowing up, all I saw was my parents trying to be the best people they could be, and people coming to them for wisdom, coming to them for guidance, and them not putting themselves on a pedestal, but literally being face-to-face with these people and saying, āIām no better than you, but the fact that youāre coming to me to reach some sort of enlightenment or to shine a light on something, that makes me feel love and gratitude for you.”
āThey always give back what people give to them. And sometimes they keep giving and giving and giving,ā she continued, adding that āItās not just about money. Itās not just about giving people gifts or whatever. What my parents have given to me is not anything that has to do with money or success or anything that society says people should be focusing onā itās something spiritual that only certain people can grasp and accept.ā
It’s nice to get a sense of what it’s like to grow up in the Smith’s household, her opening up about her life shows that she is normal and that she’s human. Celebrity children have it rough and hopefully, her interview will stop people from harshly criticizing children.
