Gold Star Widow Myeshia Johnson Speaks Out About Trump’s Condolence Call

by Yah Yah

Earlier this month, Sgt. La David Johnson was killed in an ambush in Niger. President Trump personally phoned Myeshia Johnson, the fallen sergeant’s widow. Rather than offering his true condolences, President Trump reportedly insisted that “he knew what he signed up for.” Rep. Frederica Wilson of Florida also heard the phone call and called Trump out on his disrespectful comment. She was riding in a limo with her when the president called. Myeshia Johnson recently appeared on Good Morning America to address the situation.

The president said that, ‘He knew what he signed up for, but it hurts anyways.’ It made me cry because I was very angry at the tone of his voice and how he said it,” she said. “He couldn’t remember my husband’s name.”

She said Trump told her that he had her husband’s report in front of him, and that she heard him stumbling to remember his name.

“And that’s what hurt me the most,” she said. “Because if my husband is out here fighting for our country, and he risked his life for our country, why can’t you remember his name? That’s what made me upset and cry even more.”

She said she didn’t say anything to the president, she just listened. Trump tweeted about Wilson, calling her “wacky” and accusing her of lying on him. Johnson confirmed that Wilson was “100% correct” about what the president said over the phone.

“The phone was on speakerphone,” Johnson said. “Why would we fabricate something like that?”

Johnson said she wants the world to know how great of a soldier her husband was. She is expecting a baby girl in January, whom she plans to tell “her father is a hero.”
