26-Year-Old Woman Killed While Protecting Her Sister From Abusive Ex-Boyfriend: ‘She Made Sure We Were Always Good’

Tiera Rivers, a 26-year-old woman remembered for her “bubbly” spirit and protective heart, tragically lost her life on April 19, 2025, while defending her older sister during a heated domestic dispute in a Sacramento apartment.

According to reports from KCRA-3, Tiera was staying at the apartment complex when she walked in on an argument between her sister, Amber Rivers, and Amber’s ex-boyfriend. What began as a verbal dispute quickly escalated into deadly violence.

“My sister tried to protect me, and she lost her life while doing so,” Amber told KCRA. “I was trying to help her the best I could, trying to get her hope.”

Police say that later that same day, the ex-boyfriend—whose name has not yet been released—died by suicide following the shooting.

Tiera’s younger sister, Sydney Rivers, described her as a “goofy,” lighthearted presence who always ensured her family was taken care of. “She definitely made sure we were always good,” Sydney said.

Now, the family is channeling their grief into action.

“We’re trying to create an organization in honor of Tiera,” Amber said, “called ‘Tiera Rivers’ Sisters Against Spousal Abuse’ to help other women in the world that are experiencing similar things—to try to get them help or remove them from the situation.”

A GoFundMe launched by the family describes Tiera as “a beautiful young princess who brought so much joy to our lives,” and adds, “the pain of losing her is unimaginable.”

The sisters hope that through advocacy and outreach, Tiera’s selfless act of love won’t be in vain—and that other women may be spared from similar tragedies.

“Any type of help so we can be there to help them,” Amber said. “So this doesn’t happen to somebody else.”

This case highlights the deadly realities of domestic and intimate partner violence, particularly the risks faced not only by victims, but also by loved ones who step in to protect them. The family hopes Tiera’s name will live on—not just in memory, but in meaningful action for women in crisis.
