In honor of International Women’s Day, Kith released a collection of rare, never before seen images of Aaliyah as part of Kith Women’s partnership with the late singer’s estate and photographer Robert Whitman.
The proceeds go toward the Detroit School of Arts and the I Support the Girls foundation, which distributes essential items, including bras, underwear, and menstrual hygiene products, allowing women and folx experiencing homelessness, impoverishment, or distress to stand tall with dignity.
“We worked with Kith and the renowned photographer Robert Whitman on a project to honor the life and legacy of Aaliyah. Together we created a clothing capsule using never-before-seen pictures of Aaliyah taken by Whitman, as well as a short film with students from Aaliyah’s alma mater, the Detroit School of Arts, and a capsule collection,” a statement shared to Aaliyah’s official Instagram page reads.
“Aaliyah graduated from high school with a 4.0 GPA, which now houses a recital hall named in her honor. Our goal was to uplift their next generation of female students by using our platform to share their talents and perspectives,” the statement continued.
The collection also featured an assortment of articles of the star’s clothing and photos taken of young creatives at Detroit School of Arts.
“Aaliyah was born in Brooklyn, grew up in Detroit, and went on to touch the whole world with her light and creativity,” the later singer’s brother, Rashad Haughton, said in a statement. “That’s why I felt that Kith would be the perfect partner to release unseen photos of my sister on their incredible fashion designs.”
The collection comes more than 25 years after the songstress died in a tragic airplane crash on Aug. 25, 2001. Aaliyah’s music was recently added to all streaming platforms by Background Records 2.0, which is owned by Aaliyah’s uncle, Barry Hankerson—her former manager.
