A tragic hit-and-run incident in San Jose, California, has resulted in the arrest of a 15-year-old teenager in connection with the crash, which claimed the life of a pregnant woman.

The victim, identified as 21-year-old April Zoglauer, was a beloved preschool teacher. The incident occurred on October 24, and the teenage suspect was taken into custody on Saturday, as reported by KGO-TV.

The suspect has been booked into a juvenile detention center.

According to local law enforcement, the fatal collision transpired when a black Nissan, in which April Zoglauer was a passenger, was struck by a stolen white Hyundai sedan occupied by two males. Following the crash, the two occupants of the stolen Hyundai fled the scene. The police have confirmed that a second individual involved in the incident is still at large.

Social media played a crucial role in the identification and location of the apprehended suspect. San Jose police acknowledged the circulation of photos and information related to the crime on social media platforms. However, it took some time for law enforcement to verify the accuracy and relevance of these online materials.

Authorities have noted an increase in vehicle thefts linked to a viral social media trend that provides step-by-step instructions on stealing specific Kia and Hyundai car models. This trend has contributed to a rising number of stolen vehicles in the area.

A heartbreaking detail of the incident is that April Zoglauer was 27 weeks pregnant at the time of the collision. She was rushed to the hospital for an emergency cesarean section, but the infant also passed away the following day.

In a statement, the San Jose Police Department revealed that despite efforts to save the child, the baby succumbed to injuries and was pronounced deceased on October 25, 2023.

A GoFundMe campaign initiated by Zoglauer’s family aims to raise funds for funeral and medical expenses.

As of Tuesday, the fundraiser had collected $24,087. The campaign description emphasizes the importance of supporting the grieving family during this challenging time and honoring the memory of April, who was described as a wonderful mother, friend, teacher, and person.
