Simone Biles’ husband has since said he’s “unbothered” by the backlash for saying he’s “the catch” in their relationship.
According to the Green Bay Packers safety, the greatest gymnast of all time was just another match when the two connected on a dating app.
While appearing on the latest episode of The Pivot podcast with his wife, Jonathan Owens told hosts that he “didn’t know who she was” when he first connected with Simone Biles in 2020.
“I’m like, ‘Lemme see who this is.’ I never really paid attention to gymnastics, so it piqued my curiosity. The first thing I saw was that she just had a bunch of followers. So in my mind, I’m like, ‘OK, she’s gotta be good’,” Owens told Fred Taylor, Ryan Clark, and Channing Crowder Jr.
Biles met Owens in 2020 on the dating app Raya when the two matched and began texting. After a few days, they decided to meet up, and the rest is history.
The couple tied the knot on April 22, 2023, at Harris County Courthouse in Houston.
In the clip, when Ryan Clark asked if Owens considered himself “the catch” in their marriage, the Green Bay Packers quickly agreed that he was.
“I always say that the men are the catch,” Owens continued while sitting next to his wife, the most highly decorated gymnast in the history of the world.
His comments sparked controversy, and the internet quickly hopped on it, expressing their disbelief and suggesting that Biles “deserves better”.
Shortly after the firestorm, the newlyweds are issuing a show of solidarity on social media.
The couple took to Instagram to address the backlash after the NFL star received over his comments about their relationship in the interview.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom receipt took a more subtle approach with a photo uploaded and a “mood” caption. While her husband, Jonathan Owens, captioned his with a brazen “unbothered”.
