Being the first-ever Black Housewife on Real Housewives of Beverly Hills comes with a lot of responsibility. And since Garcelle Beauvais made her debut on the show, the issue of race has come up time and time again.
During last season’s reunion, Garcelle and Kyle Richards (who is white) got into it. The tension between the pair had been brewing all season, but when Kyle waited until the virtual reunion to out Garcelle for an unpaid charity donation, Garcelle expressed that she felt Kyle’s actions were racially motivated. She says she would not have called out one of the white housewives.
Now this season, Crystal Kung Minkoff, who is of Asian descent, claims that she’s experienced due to her ethnic heritage. And she says Sutton Stracke, who is close to Garcelle, is guilty of the crime.
Garcelle denies Sutton is racist. She goes even further to deny that any of the ladies on the show are racist.
“Sutton is not a racist,” Garcelle told Hollywood Life. “Nobody on the show is a racist.”
Garcelle denied that Sutton was attempting to silence Crystal by talking over her in the heated conversation. She says they all shoot for long hours and are often tired.
“I don’t think she was trying to take anything away from Crystal’s story,” Garcelle said. “Sometimes you want to tell your story too and you might talk over a friend and I think people can be really hard and she owned up to what people were saying in terms of her interrupting Crystal. She didn’t mean any harm.”
Last year, Garcelle spoke about the pressures of being the sole Black member of the cast.
“Did I feel the pressure of being the first Black woman on [RHOBH]? Yes, I definitely felt pressure that people wanted me to come in and do a certain thing or have a chip on my shoulder,” Garcelle said on “Reality Life with Kate Casey”. “I really didn’t want to be labeled an angry Black woman, because that’s not who I am. I just wanted to stay true to who I am, and I think that’ss what people have been able to see so far”
