Global icon Beyoncé, renowned for her unparalleled success in the music industry, is now making waves in philanthropy with a new initiative to address homelessness in her hometown of Houston.
Teaming up with former Destiny’s Child bandmate Kelly Rowland, Beyoncé is spearheading The Knowles-Rowland Project, a groundbreaking endeavor in collaboration with Harris County and the nonprofit organization Bread of Life.
The project aims to convert a local gym in Houston’s Midtown area into 31 permanent housing units for the homeless. These units will be complemented by various essential support services, including case management, peer specialists, and various mental and physical health services.
Scheduled to break ground in October 2024, the project comes with an estimated cost of $8.4 million, a significant portion of which will be covered by the American Rescue Plan, an economic stimulus package designed to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Beyoncé’s commitment to addressing social inequalities and uplifting her community is evident in her involvement in this initiative.
This is not the first time Beyoncé has directed her philanthropic efforts towards housing projects. In 2017, she donated $7 million to her childhood church, St. John’s Downtown, a portion of which was used to establish the Knowles-Temenos Place Apartments, providing housing, meals, and job-preparation training for the homeless.
