New reports suggest that Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam champion, is preparing a surprising return to professional competition nearly four years after stepping away from the sport.

According to multiple recent reports, the tennis icon has submitted a wildcard entry request for the doubles draw at the upcoming Queen’s Club Championships in London, scheduled to begin on June 8. If confirmed, it would mark her first competitive appearance since her emotional farewell at the 2022 U.S. Open.

The reported comeback adds a new twist to the long-running speculation about whether Williams would ever return to competition. Behind-the-scenes updates now suggest the possibility is no longer just a rumor, but an active development.

Reports shared during the “Served” podcast, hosted by former player and close friend Andy Roddick, indicated that Williams is expected to partner with Canada’s rising star Victoria Mboko in the doubles event. That pairing, if finalized, would immediately become one of the most closely watched storylines of the grass-court season.

Her potential return would mark a dramatic shift from the stance she has maintained since retiring. After her final match at the 2022 U.S. Open, where she exited in the third round against Ajla Tomljanović, Williams suggested she was stepping away from the sport to focus on life beyond tennis.

In recent months, however, rumors intensified after it was revealed that Williams had re-entered the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s anti-doping testing pool, a move that sparked widespread speculation about a possible comeback. At the time, she pushed back strongly against the claims, describing the online chatter as a “wildfire” and insisting she was not returning to professional tennis.

She reinforced that position again during a January appearance on the Today show with anchor Savannah Guthrie, where she downplayed any comeback talk and said she was simply enjoying retirement. When pressed on the subject, she laughed off the speculation but declined to go into detail about her testing status, saying she was not allowed to discuss it publicly.

Despite those earlier denials, the latest reports suggest a different direction may now be unfolding. The idea of Williams stepping back onto the court, especially in a competitive doubles setting, has already reignited global interest and speculation across the tennis world.

For now, there has been no official confirmation from Williams or tournament organizers. Still, the possibility alone has been enough to send fans into discussion mode, as one of the sport’s most dominant figures appears once again linked to the game she once ruled.
