WNBA All-Star Angel Reese is just one technical foul away from a league-mandated suspension, raising concern for a struggling Chicago Sky squad desperately clinging to its playoff hopes.
The Sky dropped another game on Sunday, falling 93-78 to the Indiana Fever—a matchup notably missing both Reese and her on-court rival Caitlin Clark, who also sat out. The loss pushes Chicago to 7-18 on the season, while the Fever improved to 14-12.
Reese, known for her intensity and fierce competitiveness, has already racked up seven technical fouls this season. According to WNBA rules, eight technical fouls trigger an automatic one-game suspension.
Chicago Sky head coach Tyler Marsh addressed the situation during Sunday’s postgame comments, revealing the team is actively trying to prevent the looming suspension.
“We’ve done our work on our side to try to get a couple of those [technicals] rescinded in the moment and beyond, and that’s up to the league’s discretion,” Marsh said. “It’s hard to control the passion in the heat of the moment.”
The WNBA does allow for certain technical fouls to be rescinded upon review, particularly if the league determines they were assessed unfairly or in error. Should any of Reese’s infractions be overturned, it would delay or eliminate the threat of suspension—at least temporarily.
Key Player, Critical Moment
Despite the team’s record, Angel Reese has been a bright spot for the Sky this season. The 6’3″ forward is averaging 13.8 points, 12.5 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.4 steals per game, and was named to her second consecutive WNBA All-Star Game earlier this month.
A suspension would come at a critical time for Chicago, which remains several games out of playoff contention with just weeks left in the regular season. Losing Reese—even for one game—could prove to be a serious setback.
