Cardi B has been accused of racism after she forgot the name of her gown’s designer, opting instead to refer to him as “Asian and everything.”

Cardi B is now speaking out, defending her actions and explaining why she couldn’t recall the name of the man who designed her stunning black gown at the 2024 Met Gala.

Vogue’s Emma Chamberlain asked the 31-year-old Grammy winner who was responsible for her jaw-dropping appearance, and she hesitated before responding, “They’re Asian and everything.”

After the now-viral gaffe has garnered a lot of criticism on social media.

Gilbert Cheah, the former managing director of Vogue, is said to have been responsible for some criticism directed towards Cardi. He confronted her in the comments section of the Instagram Reel of her from the event.

“For the record and recognition, and no thanks to Cardi B, the designer of her gown is Sensen Lii, who’s Chinese. The gown took two months to make. I personally think it’s boring and not even on theme, but she chose it and should have at least remembered his name and not just said that he’s ‘Asian,'” Cheah wrote.

Note that Gilbert Cheah is Peranakan (mixed Chinese and Malay/Indonesian heritage).

Now, Cardi B has come out to clarify what went wrong.

The rapper explained on Instagram after calling Sensen Lii of Windowsen, the designer of her jaw-dropping black dress for the 2024 Met Gala, “Asian and everything,” during the interview at the event.

“First and first, when I was on the red carpet, I was very scared,” the Grammy-winning MC explained in a post that had been taken down but not before TMZ shared it.

“The dress was supposed to be on a little podium, and I’ve been practicing how to pose on the podium,” Cardi B continued. “But on the carpet, I wasn’t allowed to use the podium. So I had a lot of things in my mind, and I was being rushed to the front of the line.”

“I was like, ‘Damn.’ How do I pronounce his name? My mind was just racing,” she added. Noting that she “didn’t want to be offensive,” she said, “‘Asian designer’ because I knew the designer was Asian, but I wasn’t sure what nationality the designer was.”

Cardi B claimed she “forgot [how] to pronounce the designer’s name because his name is a little bit complicated.”
